we don't get paid because we're not meant to stick around forever. we're summoned by masters to do their bidding. kind of a temporary thing

its more like. you know of some grand hero from legend, and if you're a mage who knows the spells and rituals and has enough mana, you can summon a version of them to fight at your side! and you become their Master. they become your Servant
technically we are summoned in special circumstances where we can try to fight for what we wish for along our Masters but this is just weird all around
This is a lot. I mean, I believe you when you say this situation is weird but I can't get over the fact that wizards can summon you without asking for your permission first. wait is that what you meant by 'never really worked'? does your master keep you alive?
